When the weather turns hot and humid, motorcyclists tend to dread putting on all the usual gear for a day out on the road. Certain helmets, heavier clothes, and thicker gloves and boots can all make a hot ride unbearable. By sticking with a few lightweight alternatives, riders can still enjoy the summer without sweating it up too much.
It's not necessary to sacrifice safety or style to stay cool during the summer. Finding a well-ventilated jacket—one that has open-weave fabrics and quick-drying materials—will deter a lot of excess heat and make for a more comfortable ride. These jackets also usually come with strategically placed protective elements to keep riders safe as well as sweat-free.
When it's scorching outside, the first thing any motorcycle rider will want to do is ditch anything made of leather. That's where mesh pants come in handy. These summer-perfect pants use panels of mesh material to allow lots of cool air ventilation. And as with breathable riding jackets, motorcyclists' mesh pants usually feature protective padding as well.
Motorcyclists use their hands a lot. The usual leather protective gloves are restrictive and, especially when the temperatures climb, quite toasty. Luckily, there are a number of lighter options available, including gloves made with moisture-wicking fabrics, perforated leather gloves, fingerless gloves, and gloves made from the same breathable materials as the pants and jackets mentioned above.
Beyond simply buying more heat-conscious gear, there are a few easy tricks riders can use to stay even cooler on the road. Drinking enough water is an obvious one, but it's also helpful to keep bandanas and neckbands wet and cold. A rider's head and face can be protected from the sun's hot rays with adequate sunglasses and a lighter-colored helmet.
